Why YouTube Thumbnail Quality Options Are Sometimes Missing

7 min readUpdated 17 September 2026

See why max resolution thumbnails are not always available, what changes with Shorts and live streams, and how to interpret missing sizes correctly.

You paste a video URL into a thumbnail downloader and the largest size is greyed out. Nothing is broken. YouTube generates thumbnail sizes from the source upload, and it cannot generate detail that was never there.

The five standard sizes

  • maxresdefault — 1280×720, only generated for uploads of 720p or higher.
  • sddefault — 640×480, generated for most standard uploads.
  • hqdefault — 480×360, effectively always present.
  • mqdefault — 320×180, always present.
  • default — 120×90, always present.

Why maxresdefault goes missing

It is the only one of the five that is conditional. If the original video was uploaded at 480p — common for anything from before roughly 2010, and for some phone uploads — YouTube has no 720p frame to derive it from, so the file simply does not exist. Requesting it returns a placeholder rather than an error, which is why a naive downloader appears to 'work' and hands you a grey 120×90 image.

How to tell a placeholder from a real image

YouTube's missing-thumbnail placeholder is a tiny file, on the order of a kilobyte. A tool that checks the response size can distinguish a real thumbnail from a placeholder, which is what the availability badges on the downloader are doing.

Thumbnail Downloader The downloader probes each size and each format before offering it, so an unavailable size is labelled rather than silently substituted.

Shorts and live streams

Shorts are vertical, and YouTube derives their cover image differently. The 16:9 thumbnail paths often still return something, but it may be a letterboxed or cropped frame rather than a designed thumbnail. Live streams get thumbnails once the stream has a frame to use, so an upcoming premiere may have only the smallest sizes until it starts.

JPG and WebP are separate sets

YouTube serves thumbnails as both JPG and WebP from different paths. Availability is not guaranteed to match: a video may have a WebP at one size and not the other. That is why switching format re-checks availability rather than just rewriting the file extension.

What to do when the size you want is missing

  1. Take the largest size that does exist — usually hqdefault at 480×360.
  2. Do not upscale it and expect detail to appear; upscaling invents pixels, it does not recover them.
  3. If you need a large image for your own video, design a fresh thumbnail at 1280×720 or larger instead of enlarging someone else's.
Thumbnail Resizer The resizer crops or fits any image you do have to a clean 16:9 at either output size.
